Karolina joined the Department of Politics at the University of Maastricht in 2006. In 2008, she was awarded a PhD at Loughborough University (Department of Politics, International Relations and European Studies) in the United Kingdom. Karolina holds the equivalent of a Masters degree in Politics from the University of Gdansk (Poland) and a Master of Arts (MA) in European Public Affairs from the University of Maastricht and the European Institute of Public Administration (EIPA). She also studied at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the ERASMUS University in Rotterdam.

Her doctoral thesis analysed Europeanisation of Polish foreign policy. It focused on the institutional changes in the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and looked into Polish and European policies towards the new neighbours of the EU: Ukraine and Belarus. Apart from that, Karolina's research interests include Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) and the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP). Together with Ana Juncos from Bristol University, she has also conducted research on the decision-making processes and socialisation of diplomats in the Council of the EU, particularly at the level of the Working Groups. Currently, they both study socialisation and preference formation in the Council Secretariat.

In Maastricht, Karolina coordinates and teaches several modules, including External Relations of the European Union, Negotiation Skills, Lobbying in the European Union, a MARBLE course "Beyond the size of artichokes and the shape of cucumbers. How Europe affects its citizens and member states" (together with Dr Mariolina Eliantonio from the Faculty of Law) and she coordinates a six-month Minor European Studies program, mainly for exchange students.
